Wm Anderson McCoy-lowres

McCoy, William Anderson 1a

Birth Name McCoy, William Anderson 2 3a 4 5 6a 7 3b 8a 9a 10a

William Anderson McCoy seems to have always gone by the given name of "Anderson", usually shortened to "Ance". Aside from the two early census entries for him, in 1850 and 1860, and possibly Confederate army records, there is no other reference to his first name being William. This usage of given names appears to have been common in the Kentucky and West Virginia mountain regions of the time. For example, William Anderson Hatfield, the primary Hatfield protagonist in the infamous feud, with whom Anderson McCoy was probably familiar, was known as "Devil Ance".
