GERMAN NEW RIVER SETTLEMENT
McCOY (McKay)
The McCoys located near the great falls of New River, now the extreme western part of now Montgomery County are descendants of the McKay's, who were among the first to come into the lower Valley oi. Virginia. Robert McKay is the first ‘perhaps to have a will recorded in Augusta County, 1745. He devised to sons, Robert, James, Zachariah, and Moses. That the McCoys are such descendants is determined by a will which bequeaths to several McKays and to two McCoys, the McCoys being placed in parenthesis. The change from Kay to Coy is easily accounted for when you get the Scotch pronunciation of the former Word. The “A” is broad and sounded as if an “O” and t-he “Y” form- ing almost another syllable.
Just when Richard McCoy first came into the New River Settlement cannot be determined. it must be by 1760 for he held good hunting grounds which would have been pre-empted if he had gone in later. His will was executed in 1792 and the same was probated in 1793. in 1794 a Land Grant was taken out for his holdings, evidently by his offspring, in order to make secure their title. He devised to William and George. The issue of William were Moses, George, and Henry. Each of these sons left families. The issue of George were Francis and Jack . Issue of Moses: Amanda {Harless), Sarah Sifford, Isaac, married Melissa Albert, George, Wilzony (Albert), Nancy (Grant Whitaker] and Thomas (married Dillon}, issue: George, Francis and Jack. Of George, William Francis McCoy and Mrs. Lewis Ekiss.
