Note

As with several of Wm Anderson McCoyâ€™s siblings, Pleasant's fate was for a long time a mystery. I mistook him for a Pleasant Peace McCoy born around the same time, who ended up in Lawrence, KY. His father, too, was a Wm McCoy, but his mother was Sarah James, not Mary Burriss. The references to that Pleasant have been removed.

Another Pleasant died Camp Douglas a Confederate prisoner of war on 02 Dec 1863. Cause of death was 'inflammation of lungs'. He was (re)buried in Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago (803 W) in a mass grave known as Confederate Mound. He was in the 5th Virginia Infantry and was captured at Cumberland Gap. Further prisoner of war records show that this Pleasant (also listed as P M) McCoy was captured in company with a James H McCoy and Randolph McCoy. This trio was clearly two sons of Wm and Mary McCoy, Pleasant and James H, with the cousin, Randolph McCoy. Pleasantâ€™s death is documented above. What became of James is unclear. Randolph, however was released and went on to become the McCoy leader of the infamous feud.

Why Pleasant (M) McCoy, son of William McCoy and Mary Burris of Pike County, Kentucky, is NOT Pleasant (Peace) McCoy who died in Martin County, Kentucky, in 1938.

Civil War Prisoner of War records show a Pleasant (sometimes P M) McCoy captured along with James H McCoy (brother) and Randolph (cousin) in Pike County in 1863. This Pleasant McCoy is documented as having died at Camp Douglas in Chicago IL on 3 Dec 1863. Therefore, he cannot have been the Pleasant McCoy who is later found in Martin County KY and Lawrence County KY, that person having been Pleasant Peace McCoy, son of William and Sarah McCoy, not William McCoy and Mary Burriss of Pike County KY.
