Note
Wm McCauley Esq (1738-1825) bequeathed a house and lot in Hillsborough NC to his son, John, for his lifetime and, after that, to John's son William and his heirs. However, John devised that property to his son, James, in 1828 following the death of John's sister, Jane McCollum, who had apparently occupied the house most recently.
This seems to indicate that John's son, William, died (or had renounced his inheritance) between 1818 (the date of Wm Esq's will) and the 1828 deed.

Note
Probate documents in Orange County indicate that he died before May 15, 1833. At the time of his death, he was the administrator of the estate of William Whyte, who apparently owed $25 to Jonathan P. Sneed, assignee Samuel M Stuart and guardian of Spencer S. Reeves. Spencer may have been a descendant of William McCauley, Esq. The probate documents of John's son, Charles, and associated documents from Tipton County TN of another son, James, show that John McCauley and Jenett/Jane Blackwood had the following children:
