Notes
Note
For reasons as yet unknown to me, Glenn Lowery (William McCauley Sketch of 2009 q.v. under William) states that James was disinherited because of his marriage to Catherine Chapman and moved to Mississippi where he became known as William McCauley (really??). According to Lowery, James (William) fought in the War of 1812, came home to his blacksmith operation and was murdered by unknown assailant(s). His son, William Jr, was "bound to one John McCauley and lived in Montgomery Co, TN.”
As Lowery states:
>The son, James married Catherine Chapman on 12 Jan 1792 apears to be the oldest son. For this marriage he was disinherited. He went to Mississippi. There, he was referred to as William McCauley. He was a planter and a soldier of the War of 1812. He was killed after his return home from the war in a blacksmith shop with the butt of a gun . His killer was never caught. His son, William, Jr, was bound out to one John Mccauley and lived in Montgomery Co, TN. His descendants are documented in the History of Humphreys County Tennessee. It is my thought that this James, being the eldest son, was possibly named James William McCauley.
This is difficult to reconcile with a James McCauley witnessing his father's will in 1818, but it is true that there is no James McCauley in that will. Perhaps the witness was a grandson James? Actually, it makes little to no sense for a son to witness the will but be excluded from it.

Note
This birth date is probable based upon date of marriage. The 1758 date is alleged by applications to the SAR based upon faulty data. Capt. James McCauley in Marion's Brigade in SC was a James McCauley who lived there in the 1770s and 1780, not our JM. |
