Rosanna Crabtree 22 (1832)
Orange County Probate files have a case for Charles, who died intestate. His mother,
Jane was administratrix. The following, Charles's only brothers and sisters,
were named his heirs:
William M'Cauley
John M'Cauley
George J. M'Cauley
Elizabeth, wife of William Crabtree
Catherine, wife of Willis Hester of Chatham County
Mary, widow of John Blackwood
James M'Cauley, who resides outside the borders of NC
Debts ~$1030 + administrative fees ~$20
Personal estate ~$100
Real estate 50 ac at $2 per acre
Jane petitioned for sale of the land and for subpoenas of the heirs.
The land was sold to William M'Cauley for $100.25 on credit of 12 months.
The probate records in Orange County for John McCauley, deceased in 1833, include
records from Tipton County TN naming James M'Cauley guardian of Velina Ann and
George J M'Cauley, minor children of John M'cauley. late of Orange County NC.
James signed a bond of $1300, 6 Nov 1848 as surety for the children.
These 1833 documents indicate that both James and Matthew M'Cauley were executors
for the estate of John. Presumably James and Matthew were brothers. Matthew seems
to have dropped out of the picture by 1854 (perhaps by 1848?).
[Presumably there are additional documents in Tipton Countyt TN.]
The probate documents of Charles (above) imply that Velina Ann was deceased by 1854
and that George J M'Cauley survived.
What happened between the 1833 death of John M'Cauley in Orange County NC and the
assumption of guardianship in 1848 by James M'Cauley in 1848 is unknown.
So the children of John M'Cauley and Jennet Blackwood (Jane) were:
James
Matthew (deceased by 1854, maybe by 1848)
William
John
Charles (died in 1854)
George J., minor in 1848
Velina Anne, minor in 1848, absent by 1854
Elizabeth (William Crabtree)
Catherine (Willis Hester of Chatham County)
Mary (John Blackwood)
