Note
Wm McCauley Esq (1738-1825) bequeathed a house and lot in Hillsborough NC to his son, John, for his lifetime and, after that, to John's son William and his heirs. However, John devised that property to his son, James, in 1828 following the death of John's sister, Jane McCollum, who had apparently occupied the house most recently.
This seems to indicate that John's son, William, died (or had renounced his inheritance) between 1818 (the date of Wm Esq's will) and the 1828 deed.

ODB 28/441 William Mccauley to James S Smith, 29 Sep 1837, a certain house & lot in Hillsborough which was owned by Col William McCauley in his lifetime and was given by him in his will to his son John McCauley for life and then to his grandson William McCauley, which was for a long series of years used as a tavern or house for retail of spiritous liquors and which is on ___ Street, adj William Anderson's corner storehouse on N, by John U Kirkland Allison house on N, and by Josiah Turner house on N and W, by lot formerly owned by John Casey in his lifetime on W, by the house owned by Samuel Thompson on the S, and by ___ Street on E. The blanks for a street name, present in the original, must be Churton. Assuming that the 1818 will of Wm McCauley Esq had been followed, this implies that John McCauley had died sometime before the date of this sale. |
