Charles Borup was born Michael Singlersen Borup

Einer Vig, the prodigious cataloger of the citizenry of Washington County, Nebraska, considered Niels Peter Borup to be German despite his Danish name. He made no comment about Charles Borup; probably he felt he did not need to, since Charles was buried in the German Cemetery. He did surmise that Niels and Charles were brothers. The recently discovered (December 2015) records from Schleswig prove that Niels did have a brother, but he was named Michael. But there are some interesting facts that all but prove that Michael, once he came to the US, became Charles. First there is the fact that there is a New Orleans arrival record from 1855 for Michael Borup from Hadersleben (Haderslev), a "joiner" (carpenter). Curiously, there is no further US record for Michael - no census record, no nothing. And that is when Charles Borup appears, first in the 1860 census in Iowa; correct age, correct origin; even the correct occupation, carpenter. In the next census, he is in Washington County, Nebraska, where Niels Peter Borup also resides. Coincidence? Then there is the fact that the birthdate derived from Charles Borup's headstone is the same as the birthdate of Michael Borup.

Birth	Note The identification of Charles Borup (1827-1898; buried in the German Cemetery in Washington County NE) with Michael Singlersen Borup (born 28 March 1827 in Haderslev, Duchy of Schleswig, now Denmark) rests upon his relationship with Niels Peter Senius Borup. Through church records of Haderslev, Michael Singlersen Borup is proven to be the son of Jens Seniusen Borup and Birtha Petersdatter and younger brother of Niels Peter Senius Borup. Danish records also demonstrate that Michael was trained as a master carpenter/joiner. Older brother Niels emigrated to the United States to settle among the German colony near Belleville IL where he married and then moved to western Iowa along the Missouri River then to Washington County NE where he obtained a homestead. A few years later, Michael also emigrated, arriving in New Orleans LA. Thereafter, Michael disappears from American records, and Charles (same age, birth place and profession as Michael) appears in the 1860 census in St. Mary township, Mills County IA with wife Betsy. In 1870, Charles Borup is found in across the Missouri River in Washington County NE (home of Niels Borup) as a widower with three young children aged 4, 7 and 9) where he resides until his death in 1898. That Charles Borup, same age and occupation as Michael Borup, should emigrate from the same location as Niels (Schleswig) and come to reside in the same location as Niels, and with a surname as uncommon as Borup (Charles and Niels and their children are the only persons in Nebraska named Borup in the 1880 US Census) is too much to be accepted as a coincidence not to conclude that they were the siblings Niels and Michael. Why Michael would change his given name to Charles upon arriving in the United States is unknown.			1b 2 3b 4b 6b 8b
