Note

According to the death certificate of John Thomas Butler, he died of Diabetes Mellitus as tested by urinalysis. (No autopsy.) He was the husband of Eliza Butler. The certificate states that he was born June 8, 1851. His father was Henry JacksonButler of Bowling Green, Kentucky and his mother was Rebecca Claypool of Bowling Green, Kentucky. This was reported by Eliza Butler, who was living in Fair Play, Missouri. His occupation was gardener. His doctor, John W. Coy, had been treatinghim from January 13, 1921 to the date of death, May 14, 1921. He was buried at Salem Cemetery, Polk County, Missouri. The undertakers were Crow and Barker. Burial took place May 25, 1921.
In the 1870 U. S. Census taken August 15, 1870 in Humansville, Missouri, John T. Butler, age 19, and Margaret, age 18 are farming and living on Thomas Ashlock'Äôs land in their home. They have just gotten married within the year. John has $220 in personal wealth. John was born in Missouri and Margaret was born in Arkansas.

In the 1880 U. S. Census taken June 18, 1880 in Marion Township, Polk County, Missouri, John Thomas Butler, age 29, is living with his wife Margaret L., age 28. He farms and she keeps house. John shows that he is from Kentucky, while his father is from Tennessee and his mother is from Kentucky. Margaret is from Arkansas and her parents from Tennessee. Living with them are their children: William H, age 7; Mary Ida, age 6; Daniel R., age 5; Sidney C., age 3; and Rebecca E, age 1. William, Mary, and Daniel were born in Kentucky, and Sidney and Rebecca were born in Missouri. William was going to school during the past year. Living in the farm next to them was John Thomas'Äôs brother Caleb Butler and his family.

In the 1900 U. S. Census taken June 21, 1900 in Fair Play, Missouri, John Thomas, age 50 and born in June 1849, is living with his wife Mary E., age 47 and born in January 1852. They have been married for 13 years. Mary has had 11 children with only 8 living. John Thomas was born in Missouri and his parents in Kentucky. Mary was born in Missouri and her parents in Virginia. John Thomas is a clerk in a ? store. He and Mary can read, write, and speak English. He owns his home on High Street and is without a mortgage. Living with them are children: Arthur J., age 10 born in May 1890; Gene age 8 and born in February 1892; and Bula E., age 4 and born in August 1896. Arthur and Gene were in school during the past year.

In the 1910 U. S. Census taken on April 16, 1910 in Fair Play, Missouri, John Thomas is living on Hill Street with his wife Mary E. and daughter Bulah E. John Thomas is 60, Mary E. is 58, and Bulah E. is 18. John has been married twice and Mary three times. John and Mary have been married for 22 years. John was born in Kentucky while his father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Kentucky. Mary was born in Missouri and her parents in Virginia. They speak English and are not employed. They can read and write. John Thomas owns his home with no mortgage.

In the 1920 U. S. Census taken February 4, 1920 in Fair Play, Missouri, John Thomas Butler and Mary E. live alone in town. John is 68 and Mary is 66. They can read and write. John was born in Kentucky and Mary in Missouri. John'Äôs father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Kentucky. Mary'Äôs parents were born in Virginia. Neither is working.
