William Butler (Boteler) Sr. born ca. 1738, lived for a time in Frederick County, Maryland. Prior to 1764 he married Ann Duckett, daughter of Jacob and Sarah duckett. Jacob's will dated April 24, 1976, bequeathed to "my son-in-law William Boteler" a tract of land called Oversight, containing 85 acres, and bequeathed a cow and calf to "my daughter Ann Boteler." On May 29, 1771, William Boteler sold this tract of land, his wife relinquishing dower rights. In 1772, William Butler of Bedford County, Virginia, purchased of David Matlock of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, a tract of land on Stonewall Creek. (Bedford County Deeds, Ek. 4, P. 365). Upon the creation of Campbell County, 1781-82, his land fell into that county. This statement is borne out in the pension files of William (S 3097) and his son (S 3098), both claims being filed in Anderson County, Tennessee in 1834. May 29, 1798, William Boteler purchased an additional tract of land on Stonewall Creek, Campbell County, Virginia. November 7, 1804, William Boteler and wife Ann, of Campbell County, Viginia, sold 128 acres on Stonewall Creek. November 2, 1805, William Boteler, Sr. of Anderson County, Tennessee sold to Lewis Rector (formerly his son-in-law) 155 acres on both sides of Stonewall Creek, Campbell County, Virginia. July 14, 1807, William Butler bought 450 acres on Poplar Creek in Anderson County, Tennessee, from his son, Thomas Butler. February 13, 1829, William butler gave his grandson William G. Butler 100 acres on Poplar Creek. December 21, 1832, William Butler Sr. sold to William R. Butler, Henry R. Butler, and John Butler, 70 acres on Poplar Creek. No records have been found relating to the disposition of the additional land. He applied for pension April 1, 1834, aged 96 in Anderson County, Tennessee. Other deeds disclose that he was yet living November 20, 1834. His will, undated, was recorded in Anderson County, January 1836. William Butler Sr. names the following people in his will: Sons: Thomas, Jacob, Henry, William Daughters: Elizabeth Manley, Mary Rector Grandaughters: Elizabeth Pryor, Nancy Rector Grandsons: Jacob Rector, Benjamin Rector WILLIAM BUTLER, SR. Note from Pat McDonald: I have not personally researched this prominent family, am not a descendant, and have no knowledge of the ancestry of William Butler. My father published the following information originally in a series of newspaper articles on local history in the Oliver Springs area. He later combined the articles into a book, published 1985. It is likely he may have been contacted afterwards by other people who could add to his information, but I don't have any such data, if it exists.
Snyder E. Roberts was born in 1908, the youngest of 10 children born to Samuel Henry Roberts b. 1866. He graduated with honors from the University of TN, and among other things, was a History teacher. He lived all his life in the area. He wrote several other books, and was the City Historian for Oliver Springs, which is right on the Roane and Anderson County line. I have every reason to believe his research was done in the local courthouses,both of which would have been less than 30 minutes from his home. He probably interviewed living descendants, and had personal knowledge of some of the later generations.
His interest in writing the articles (and my interest in publishing to this site) was to show how this family impacted the Roane and Anderson County areas. It is not meant to be a complete Butler/Boteler genealogical study. I have made no attempt to change what he wrote, but there certainly could be clerical errors.

William Butler, Sr. was born 1738, and died 9 November 1836 in Anderson County TN. He married ANN DUCKETT.
The Butler families' story began in Anderson County when Charles McClung conveyed to Thomas Butler one thousand acres of land on Poplar Creek located on both sides of the present Oliver Springs - Oak Ridge highway. Deed recorded in Knox Co. Deed Book F, Vol, 2, page 8, dated 13 Feb 1800. Shortly after 1800, Thomas Butler sold a part of this original tract to his father, WILLIAM BUTLER, SR., a RWS, and parts to his brothers, WILLIAM BUTLER, JR. and HENRY BUTLER, and parts to his sisters, ELIZABETH MANLEY and MARY RECTOR. His brother, JACOB BUTLER, bought a tract located in East Fork Valley near the Anderson - Roane line. William Butler, Sr. bought 422 acres of land from his son, THOMAS BUTLER, in 1807 (Anderson D, page 37). Among the many early Butler deeds recorded in Anderson County, TN, for conveyances of land sales and of slaves, are these examples: * G, page 134: William Butler, Sr. to his granddaughter, JANE RECTOR, my Negro boy named JIM, 10-25-1828 * G, page 155: William Butler, Sr. to my grandson, WILLIAM G. Butler (grandsons), 70 acres on Poplar Creek beginning on Thomas Butler line, 1832 * I, page 131: William Butler, Sr. to Rhoda Butler, wife of my grandson, William R. Butler, my Negro woman named BETSY, 1834.
He was a Revolutionary War Soldier from Bedford County, VA. Submitted an affidavit dated 1 April 1834 in Anderson County, TN for pension. In the affidavit, he swore that he was 96 years of age, and that he volunteered for service under Capt. Samuel McCampbell on the last of May 1780 and returned home in September of 1780. He served this four month tour of duty against the Indians in the western part of VA at McDonald's Fort on Greenbriar River where his company of 66 men had a small battle with the Indians. He received a discharge from his Captain, but said discharge was lost.
William Butler, Sr. again entered service in February of 1781 as a volunteer under Capt. Thomas Helems and marched into NC where his company, under Gen. Greene, took part in the Battle at Guilford, March 15, 1781, in which battle his captain was killed. Private Butler returned to his home in May of 1781. At the end of the affidavit, his aged hand tried to affix the signature, but only the first part is legible, and the Justice of the Peace, ROBERT GALBRAITH, signed for him and William made his mark.
The above affidavit was accompanied by an affidavit made and signed by RICHARD OLIVER and ALEXANDER GALBRAITH. The early Butlers did not appear to be active in politics, yet it is interesting to note not only the quality of the penmanship of the signers, but the fact that each of the signers was a former High Sheriff of Anderson County. His will is recorded in Anderson County Will Book, 1830-1840, page141. An abstract follows: To my son, THOMAS, my Negro girls, ELIZABETH and NELLY. To my daughter, Elizabeth Manley, my Negro women, JANE, BARBARY, CLOE, and FAN, and Negro boy, MOSES To my son, HENRY, and to my son, WILLIAM, my Negro man JOSEPH, and girl, MARGARET. To my daughter, MARY RECTOR, my Negro woman, JUDE, and her child,SETHANY To my granddaughter, ELIZABETH PRYOR, my Negro girl, MARIE. To my grandsons, JACOB and BENJAMIN RECTOR, $50 in money each. To my granddaughter, NANCY RECTOR, my Negro boy, JAMES. WITN: JAMES CRACE, JANE B. RECTOR Recorded Jan 16, 1836
William Sr. does not name his son, JACOB, in his will, and he does not give the first name of the husband of his daughter, MARY, who married a RECTOR. By other records, Jacob is known to be a son, and Elizabeth to the the wife of ANCIL MANLEY. It is not known whether the granddaughter, ELIZABETH PRYOR, was the child of a daughter who had married a PRYOR, or whether Elizabeth, the granddaughter, had married a Pryor. Evidently, William Butler, Sr. had brought many slaves with him from Virginia.
William Butler, Sr. is buried in an unmarked grave, probably in, or near, present Butler Cemetery on Poplar Creek and Highway No. 61.
"William Boteler, m. by 1764 Ann Duckett, dau of Jacob (Frederick Co. Wills A:221-2[will of Jacob Duckett]); patented 178-ace Butler's Ramble, later renamed Boteler's Discovery Resurveyed, on 10 May 1791. On 29 May 1771, William Boteler of Frederick Co., farmer, sold to James Sargent Jr., carpenter, 85 acres of Oversight, patented by Jacob Duckett in1763 (Maryland Patents, BC & GS 27:319), near Catoctin and Blue Ridge Mountains adjoining John and Priscilla; Ann released dower (Frederick Co.Land Recs. O:384). He was taxed on this tract from 1768 to 1773 (Frederick Co. Debt Books, 1768:27, 1769:23, 1770:19, 1771:24, 1772:21, 1773:21). He bought That or None from Flail Payne on 28 Oct. 1795 (Washington Co. Land Recs., 1:587-89)."
