Receives 'Dear Uncle' Letter	Note "Dear Uncle" letter to Dr. J. J. Hoylman, dated June 18, 1868, sender unknown. At the time of this letter, JJH's family would have consisted of himself, his 2nd wife, 3 children older than 12, 3 children younger than 12 and one baby to arrive later in the year. Based on the letter, this would have meant minimum travel expenses of $110.50 (without accounting for expenses from Raleigh to Charleston WV. Presumably the means of travel would have been by river to Cincinnati, then by rail to Ann Arbor. There is no reason to think that such a trip ever took place. [page 1] University of Michigan, Medical Department Ann Arbor, June 18th 1868 Dr. J. J. Hoylman. Dear Uncle. Your long looked for and welcome letter was received at last; and I hasten to reply. You know not how glad I was to hear from you and you wrote me such a good long letter. I love to write to such a correspondent as you, for I am sure to get al the news in the country. I am glad to hear of your never tiring efforts to make some money to come to the west. You wished me to tell you what it would cost you to come out here, it will cost you ten dollars from Cincinnati and seven dollars from Charleston to Cincinnati, making seventeen dollars including all expenses. You can [page 2] tell what it will cost you from Raleigh to Charleston. The children under twelve years will only cost half price – so it will cost you and family from Charleston to Ann Arbor about one hundred dollars, including all expenses and I think it cheap too for Eight hundred miles travel. As for provisions they are tolerably high. Also house rent although both are easily procured, any family can make their board by boarding students, there are about twelve hundred here all the time and there is no lack for Ladies labor all can be employed and make their living. Lycurgus can make two and three dollars a day here in the summer season just working in the gardens. And farmers give from thirty to forty dollars per month for hands. I know your family could do much better here than there. You can get any [page 3] kind of a house you may wish and where in town almost; there are quite a number to rent and sell all the time, and carpenters wages are good here all the time. I am getting two & half dollars per day, and work quite moderately only ten hours per day. I would like so much if you could come out this fall, and fix up a boarding house. I will go in with you and I know we can make money. Just sell out everything and raise all the money you can and I know you can make a start here. The man I am boarding with came here seven years ago, and was worth nothing but a wife and half a dozen children, and no carpenter either, but he commenced building little houses and selling them until no he is worth seven or eight thousand dollars, and [page 4] has raised a large family besides. I am working for him now he owns three houses and lots and will sell or rent a couple of them both are new no person been in either of them. I am just finishing one of them, which will make a good boarding house. Now I have given you all the particulars without the least exaggeration and if you think you can make anything in this county why not come at once or as soon as you can raise say three hundred dollars after selling off all your property and trading all your papers that you can get anything for. If you were here with a couple of hundred dollars to start with I will guarantee you can live easy and happy. [end]

J J Hoylman letter to M E McCoy	Note This is my inadequate transcription of a letter written by John Jordan Hoylman on 30 Nov 1890 at Lewellen, Nebraska, to his eldest daughter, Mary Eugene Hoylman (Mrs. Wm Anderson) McCoy in Roseland, Nebraska, about 225 miles to the east. It was near Roseland that JJH and multiple members of his family had settled and homesteaded between 1870 and 1873 following their trek westward from West Virginia after the Civil War. For reasons as yet unknown, John Jordan, his second family and eldest son, Lycurgus, had moved further west some time between the 1885 Nebraska State Census and 1890. In any case, it was not to last long, for John Jordan himself was to die there in 1891, and the others either moved back to central Nebraska or sent further west to Montana. The letter discusses JJH's problems with the drought that is confirmed by extant weather records for 1890 in western Nebraska. He then sheds some light on his religious convictions in describing what was occurring in the Lewellen area. He makes a few comments on family issues hinting at possibly some unstated difficulties before closing. The letter is written on the numbered front and back of a single page of a large journal book. Some portions were illegible to my eyes. The Percy Lester mentioned in the last paragraph would have been one of JJH's second wife's relatives, probably a brother and possibly Parish Pepper Lester. Also of note is the comment JJH makes regarding his son's (Lycurgus) wife. That would have been M Sarah Ross, Lycurgus' second wife. His first wife, a sister of Lachona Lester, had died several years earlier back in central Nebraska. 162 Lewellen Nebraska Nov 30” 1890 Mrs. M. E. McCoy Roseland Nebr My Dear Daughter After so long a time I drop you a few lines, although I have not written to you as I should I have not forgotten any of you. I have been so disturbed about having nothing of ?? this year that I have nearly been crazy, but I still ?trust? the Lord will provide. I have not suffered any yet but don’t see how we are to get through the winter. I have already had to sell 3 of my cattle to get bread. We did not raise anything no corn, no wheat, no oats or Barley. I did raise a few heads of cabbage that I watered by turning the spring ?? on them and a few melon vines and have a few melons but nothing ?? I have now ?? to raise a crop up here the fourth home and have not raised my head ?? and although I have still been hopeful, I am now a great deal poorer than when i came up here and I think I must try and find some other place as I don’t think I can make a living here by farming, though I do not know where to go, I shall trust in the Lord to direct me. We have had and are now having a great revival in our church here. A great many have been converted. Laurie ?? Addie are of the number. John nor Byron are yet come out though Byron has not been at the meeting any as he has been up at the Lakes working. But the Lord has certainly blessed us wonderfully. Oh I wish you and yours were here with us to enjoy the blessed good meetings we are having, have only had one minister to preach for us except some two Methodist preachers that preached a sermon or two, and one other old baptist that has been trying to preach since about the fourth of July. he has to preach to night, Pray God help him, the mouth and wisdom unto him Pray for us my dear daughter that all the family our family may be brought into the fold of the messed Jesus and not only our family but that the victories of the redeemers kingdom may be extended to earths remotest bound, till the heather be given to christ for his inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for his possessions that none shall say under his might or know yet the Lord but that all that know him from 161 the least unto the greatest, whom to known aright is life eternal, we expect it to continue the meeting all this week yet and perhaps longer, at our meeting last night there was but 4 or 5 that arose to be prayed for all the balance were converted people or members of the church. Andrew to stop writing of heavenly things I would say that the good Lord has still provided some way for me to obtain Bread, and such other necessaries that we are obliged to have I have had some practice this fall that I got the money for that helped me to get along and I hope as the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want, he taketh me to lie down in green pastures he leaders me beside the still waters H restoreth my soul; he leaders me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake, yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, i will fear no evil, for thou are with me, Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Percy Lester came up this fall and stayed a month with us he brought the Girls and mother a good many dresses and many other things and after he went home he sent Laura a very fine gold watch and personal other things also. Byron and John received several things the needed. He has been very good to us and brought my family many things they needed that I was not able to buy for them. Estaline and David are getting along very well. She has not been well lately having a very bad cold otherwise all right. Kurt folks are all well though he is up at the Lakes and his wife is running about first at one of her sisters and then at another while he and his boys shift as best they can. She is worthless, I hope you will excuse me for not writing to you as I ought to have done for it was not for a want of a disposition to write but I have had a great deal to trouble me since I got your last letter but will tell you about it more particularly some other time. The girls are all going to school and have been for some time. School will be out next Friday, but another will begin the monday following. I want them to go all the time they can. I must now close.
