Birth	Note An advertisement in the Hillsborough (NC) Recorder dated 25 July 1831 by Findley & Faucett (original placed in June 1831) stated that that company had taken over the work of Joseph Marshall in cabinetmaking in the same location, "next door above the Union Hotel". This information strongly suggests that Joseph Marshall was in Hillsborough NC into 1831, in which case Jane Virginia Marshall was born in that town. Also, the Union Hotel was in Lot 7, just across the street (Margaret Lane) south of Lot 6, the location of the McCollum home.			4a 3b

Death	Note Among the frustrating mysteries associated with Jane Virginia Marshall, first wife of John Jordan Hoylman, now mostly resolved, has been the location of her burial on the grounds of the "home place" along Lick Creek in West Virginia. In the obituaries of two of Jane's children, Mary Eugene Hoylman McCoy and William Rennick Hoylman, it is claimed that both of them were born in Richmond. Mary's obituary says that this was Richmond, Virginia, while William's says Richmond, West Virginia. There is no Richmond, West Virginia, and Richmond, Virginia, is far off to the east of any place likely to be the birth location of Mary or William. But there was, at the time of their births, a place known as New Richmond, a small community along the New River in what was then the far southwestern portion of Greenbrier County, Virginia. That area became part of a newly formed Summers County in 1871. The community is now known as Sandstone, West Virginia. And near this village is one of the waterways known as Lick Creek. So it now seems possible, if not certain, that the family traditions that the family lived in Greenbrier County along Lick Creek, beside which was eventually buried Jane Virginia Marshall Hoylman, and Mary's and William's claims to have been born in "Richmond" may well be true. If so, then Jane Virginia Marshall's final resting place is probably along the Lick Creek near today's village of Sandstone WV. Lick Creek in Summers County (previously in Greenbrier County) flows westward passing just south of Green Sulphur Springs then following the path of Highway 20 to just above Sandstone where it empties into the New River. (see Google Earth and the 1974 hydrological map of WV at the Library of Congress maps site). [NB: The New Richmond mentioned here should not be confused with the modern village of the same name, which is located in Wyoming County, WV.]			5
