Note
The papers of General Joseph Graham (see source) mention William McCauley of Mason Hill, Orange County (NC) as the Brigade Major for six months as of 29 March 1814. General Graham was in command of militia units from North and South Carolina during a war against Indians in western North Carolina. There were only two persons in Orange County named William McCauley who would have been of an age able to fulfill these duties. First would have been William McCauley Esq., then between 68 and 72 years old and under the guardianship of his son John since 1815. The other would have been his nephew, the son of Mathew McCauley, recently a student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, age 23.
