In the 1860 U. S. Census taken on September 25, 1860, N. Carter, Indiana-born farmer age 34, is shown with female Tennessee-born N. Carter age 36, female C. Carter age 13, female M. Carter age 11, female M. Carter age 10, female M. Carter age 10, male J. Carter age 8, and male M. Carter age 3. All the children were born in Illinois. The Ten-year-olds are marked as twins. Also living with them is Ben 'Äì (?Carter), an Illinois-born farm laborer age17. The value of the real estate is 4,200 and personal property is $1,200.

In the 1870 U. S. Census completed July 28, 1870, Nathan Carter, a 45-year-old Indiana-born farmer, was living with his Tennessee-born wife Nancy, age 47. She kept house with him on the farm worth $3,800 and personal assets of $1,060. He was a U.S. Citizen. Living with them were children: Mary, a 21-year-old dressmaker; Matilda and Margaret, 20-year-old school teachers; John, an 18-year-old working at home and attending school, and Marion, a 13-year-old working at home and attending school.

In the 1880 U. S. Census taken June 3, 1880, Nathan Carter, age 55, and Nancy, age 58, are living with their son Marion, age 22. Nathan is a farmer, Nancy is keeping house, and Marion is a school teacher who was unemployed for 5 months during thepast year. Nathan is shown as being from Indiana with father and mother from Maryland. Nancy is shown as being from Tennessee with father from North Carolina and mother from Tennessee. Marion is shown as being from Illinois with parents from InIndiana and Tennessee.

In the 1885 Nebraska State Census taken June 8, 1885, Nancy Carter, age 63 and born in Illinois, is living with (son) M. D. Carter, age 27 born in Illinois. Both reside in Tobias, Saline County, Nebraska.

In the 1900 U. S. Census taken on June 2, 1900, Marion D. Carter is living with his wife Jessie T., three children, Ray A., Maple J, and Eilasas, and his mother, Nancy. Marion is 41, born on July 1858, and had been married 14 years. Jessie is 36,born on October 1863, and has also been married 14 years. Ray was born on November 1886 and is 13. Maple was born on August 1891 and is 8. Eilasa was born on September 1897 and is 2. Widow Nancy was born December 1822 and is 77. Jessie has had five children, but only three are living. Marion was born in Illinois and his parents (father) in Indiana and (Mother) in Tennessee. Jessie was born in Iowa and both parents in Indiana. The children were born in Nebraska. Nancy was born in Tennessee and her parents (father) in North Carolina and (mother) in Tennessee. Marion is a physician. Ray and Maple are at school. All except Eilasa can read and write, and all speak English. Marion owns his home with no mortgage.

In the 1910 U. S. Census taken on April 21, 1910, Marion (age 52) is living with his wife Jessie I. (age 45), in Los Angeles on 2707 Central Avenue. He and Jessie have been married 24 years. He was born in Illinois and his parents were born in Illinois (father) and Tennessee (mother). Jessie was born in Iowa and her parents were born in Indiana. Marion speaks English, owns his own medical practice, and was not out of work during the past year. Marion is at home, speaks English, and reads and writes. Jessie has had five children with three living. Ray, age 23, was born in Nebraska. He is in school and not working. Merle (?), born in Nebraska, is 18 and in school. Eileen, born in Nebraska, is 12 and in school. Marion'Äôs widowed mother, Nancie, is 87. She has had six children and three are alive. She shows herself being born in Tennessee, as were her parents. She speaks English and reads and writes.
Discrepancy holds that Marion died in New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa.
