In the 1840 U. S. Census, a James Crow is listed living next to John Chaney (perhaps related to his wife Rosanna Chaney?). They have 2 boys between 5 and 10 and 1 boy and 5. Also listed are 1 girl between 10 and 15 and 1 girl between 5 and 10. The oldest male and female are shown to be between 30 and 40. Conjecture: William was born in Grainger County so the family may still have been here in 1840.

In the 1850 U. S. Census taken November 19, 1850 in the 13th District, Jefferson County, Tennessee, James Montgomery, age 27, is living with his wife Catherine, age 19. He and his wife are show as being born in Tennessee. He is a farmer, apparently renting land. Living with them is Rosanna Crow, age 41 most likely Catherine'Äôs mother also born in Tennessee. James and Catherine were married within the last year. Rosanna Crow is shown to be unable to read or write. Living next door is John Crow who is probably Catherine'Äôs brother living with the Thornhills.

In the 1860 U. S. Census taken June 12, 1860, James (age 31) and Catherine (age 22) are living in Ada, Mountain Township, Arkansas. James is a farmer with $800 in real estate, and $800 in personal wealth. Living with him are William (age 8) and John (Age 5). All were born in Tennessee except Catherine who was born in Indiana. Catherine is also shown to be unable to read or write. William andJohn had attended school during the past year.

In the 1870 U. S. Census taken July 1870 in Fayetteville, Arkansas (Prairie Township), the farmer J. M. Montgomery (age 46) is living with his wife Catherine (age 32). His real estate is worth$500 and personal wealth is valued at $200. He was born in Tennessee and Catherine was born in Indiana. He is a citizen. Children listed with the family include: William (age 19), John (age 16), Harriet 'Äé(age 10), James (age 8), and S. S. (female age 5). William and John were born in Tennessee and Harriet, James, and S. S. were born in Arkansas. Catherine cannot write. All children except S. S. attended school during the past year. John, Harriet, and James cannot write.

In the 1880 U. S. Census taken June 9, 1880 in Prairie Township, Arkansas, James (age 56) and Catherine (age 68) are married and farming. James is from Tennessee and his parents are from Virginia. Catherine is from Indianaand her parents from Tennessee. Living with James and Catherine are daughter Hattie (age 18), son James (age 17), and son George (age 9). The children are single and were born in Arkansas. Hattie had attendedschool within the past year, while James and George had not. James and Catherine are living next to Caroline VanHoozer (his sister) and Sarah Montgomery (his mother). They also live near John Montgomery (his son) and family.

In the 1900 U. S. Census taken June 21, 1900, James (age 79) born July 1820 is living with his wife Catherine (age 69) born August 1830. They have been married 52 years. James was born in Tennessee and his parents in Virginia. Catherine was born in Indiana and her parents in Tennessee. James is a farmer who rents his land. He and Catherine can read, write, and speak English. Son George B. (age 28) who was born in Arkansas in July 1671 lives with them. George is single and is a farm laborer.
