**Joseph Marshall - Mary McCollum marriage**: The Joseph Marshall (Joseph William Marshall) who resided in Danville VA and was the father of Jane Virginia Marshall (proven by her marriage bond) usually states in census records that he was born in North Carolina. That this Joseph Marshall was the one who married Mary McCollum in Orange County NC (Hillsborough) is demonstrated by the death notices sent by Joseph from Danville to the Hillsborough newspaper noting the passing of his son, Leonidas, and his wife Polly (nickname for Mary). Joseph's relationship to Jane V Marshall is also proven by two letters he sent to her during and after the Civil War. Other documentation demonstrates that Joseph was a cabinet maker well acquainted with the free black cabinet maker, Thomas Day, who was active in Milton NC and, before that, in Hillsborough. Strong circumstantial evidence points to Mary McCollum’s parents being Henry McCollum and Jane McCauley, based upon a process of elimination using census records. The naming of Mary’s daughter as Jane is also suggestive of this relationship. Jane McCauley McCollum is proven by her father’s will to have been the daughter of William McCauley, brother of Mathew McCauley, both of whom served in the Revolutionary War. William McCauley was also a member of both houses of the North Carolina legislature and was appointed a member of that state’s commission to consider the US Constitution of 1787. The McCauley brothers were Scots-Irish who immigrated from Ulster in the early 1770s. Family lore says that Jane's mother was named Anne Bailey;I have found no evidence whatsoever to support this. **Joseph Marshall - Mary McCollum marriage**: Additional, vitually conclusive, information has been found to support that this was Joseph Marshall's first marriage. This comes in the form of two death notices: one from 1846 for Polly Marshall, wife of Joseph Marshall, and the other from 1847 for Leonidas Marshall, son of Joseph Marshall, "in the 19th year of his age". According to the Hillsborough Recorder (Orange County, NC), both died in Danville VA. This verifies that Joseph Marshall had previously lived in Orange County, then lived in Danville and continued there in 1846-47. (Thanks to M Marshall for the discovery of these notices.)
