Note

According to the death certificate of Abram Bretz, death occurred July 26, 1909 at 8:30 p.m. He died in his home at 412 Merry Avenue, Bowling Green, Center Township, Wood County, Ohio. He was 63 years and 11 months old. Death was caused by 'Äúacute axcerbation in the course of Chronic Diarrheoa'Äù. Dr. F. A. Stove reported that Abram was dead when he first saw him July 27, 1909. Elizabeth Bretz, Abram'Äôs wife, reported that Abram was a farmer. He was born August 26, 1845, in Pennsylvania. His father was Abram Bretz born in Pennsylvania, and Barbara Barsh, born in Pennsylvania. The funeral firm was J. W. Brownsberger of Bowling Green, Ohio.
In the 1860 U. S. Census taken July 7 in Shelby, Jackson Township, Richland County, Ohio, Abram Bretz is a twenty-five-yea-old farm hand with the Miller family. Place of birth is Ohio.

In the 1870 U. S. Census taken August 8 in Grand Rapids, Harrison Township, Henry County Ohio, Abram Bretz, age 36, is living with his wife, Elizabeth F., age 29. He is a farmer and she keeps house. Mary D. Myers, age 7, lives with them. They have a son George A. Bretz, age one. All were born in Oho except Abram who was from Pennsylvania. Abram owns property worth $2000 and personal property worth $214. Mary attended school in the past year. Abram and Elizabeth can read and write. The family lives near Charles and Diana Naylor (Elizabeth'Äôs parents) and James Naylor'Äôs family, (Elizabeth'Äôs brother).

In the 1880 U. S. Census taken June 12 in Harrison Township, Henry County, Ohio, Abram, age 46, is living with his wife Elizabeth, age 38. He is a farmer and she keeps house. Abram is from Pennsylvania as were his parents. Elizabeth is from Ohiowhile her father was from New Jersey and her mother from New York. Living with Abram and Elizabeth are George A., age 11, Howard N., age 10, Nellie E., age 8, Verdie E., age 6, and Marshall, age 3. Abram'Äôs stepdaughter Mary D. Myers, age 16, is living with them also. All are at home. George, Howard, Nellie, Verdie, and Mary went to school during the past year. All the children were born in Ohio. The Bretz family lives next door to Charles and Diana Naylor, Elizabeth'Äôs parents.

In the 1900 U. S. Census, Abraham Bretz was counted twice. It may be that he was staying long term with his daughter who may have been caring for him or Abram may have been helping his son-in-law who was a fruit grower for the season.

In the 1900 U. S. Census taken June 9. 1900 in Washington Township, Lucas County, Ohio, Abram spelled Abarham, is the father-in-law of the head of the household, Henry Remington who is renting. Verdie Bretz was married to Henry for four years. Henry was born in April 1874 and was 26. Verdie was born in March 1874 and was 26. They have one daughter, Ida M. age 3 and born in May 1897. Verdie has had only one child and one is living. All were born in Ohio except Abram who was born in Pennsylvania. Abram is shown to be married and a farm laborer who can red, write, and speak English. Henry Remington is a fruit grower.

In the 1900 U. S. Census taken June 1 in Toledo, Ward 11, Lucas County, Ohio, Abram Bretz age 63 and born in August 1836 rents a boarding house on Madison Street, Block I. He lists his occupation as printer. Elizabeth, his wife, runs the boardingor rooming house. She is 58 and born in 1841. Abram shows that he was born in Pennsylvania and records his father being from Germany and his mother from Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was born in Ohio while her father was born in New Jersey and her mother in New York. Elizabeth has had 6 children and all are alive. Mary D. Meyers, daughter and listed roomer is house keeping. She is 36 and was born July 1863. Daughter Grace C. Bretz age 18, born in November 1881 and is a sales lady. Also listed as roomers are Everett Bredtz and Ettie Bredtz. Everett is 23 and born December 1876, while Ettie Bredtz is 24 and born in 1875. Everett is shown to be single while Ettie is married although it would appear that this is Everett and Mary Etta. Everett is a bridge builder and Ettie does house cleaning. The other roomers include:

Abram Bretz passed away suddenly at the home of his stepdaughter, Mrs. James Malhern, 412 E. Merry Ave.'Äô Monday evening about 9 o'Äôclock, death being due to old age and complications. The funeral will be held at the house Wednesday afternoon at2 o'Äôclock.
Mr. Bretz was born in Germantown, Pa., August 26, 1845, and at the age of two years came to Ohio with his parents, settling in Richland county. From there he went to Cleveland and worked in the mail department of the Evangelical Messenger for tenyears. In 1860 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Myers, at Nova, Ashland county.
After a residence of several years on a farm near Napoleon in Henry county they moved to Wood county. For the past year he had resided with a daughter in Michigan but came to the home of his daughter here about a year ago.
He is survived by a wife, three daughters, three sons and the step-daughter. They are George Bretz, of Missouri; Everett and Howard, of Oklahoma; Mrs. Chas. Salhoff, of Toledo; Mrs. Henry Remington, of Sheridan, Mich.; and Mrs. Wm. Montgomery, ofDewey, Oklahoma.
