In the 1880 U. S. Census taken in Gomer Township, Caldwell County, Missouri on June 4, 1880, Jeff Van Note, age 41, lives with his wife Mary, age 31. He is a farmer and she keeps house. He was born in Illinois. His father is from New Jersey and mother from Illinois. Mary was born in Illinois. Her father was from Indiana and mother from Tennessee. They have four children: Ira age 8, Etta age 5, Edith age 4, and Estella age 2. All were born in Illinois. Only Ira had attended school.They live next to brother James Van Note and his family.

In the 1900 U. S. Census taken In Excelsior Springs, Fishing River Township, Clay County, Missouri on June 4, 1900, Jefferson Van Note is 61, born January 1839, in Illinois. His wife is Dora Munro age 42 and born in May 1858 in Missouri. They have been married one year. His father was from New Jersey and mother from Ohio. At this point he is a hotel keeper. The residence is on Excelsior Street. He can read, write, and speak English. He owns his home free and clear. Dora is the motherof three children and has had three children. Her father was English from Canada and her mother from Missouri. Living with Jefferson is twenty-three-year-old daughter Edith born August 1987, nineteen-year-old son Charles born October 1880, seventeen-year-old William D born October 1882, seventeen-year-old stepson George E. Munro born January 1883, fourteen-year-old stepdaughter Maggie Fay Munro born August 1885, and thirteen-year-old stepdaughter Dora E. Munro born March 1887. All were born in Missouri. Charles is a hotel clerk and all the others were in school except for Edith. All can read, write, and speak English. Living with Jefferson are the following servants:
